 We are glad you are here!  We believe there is no better place to live than in the Upstate of South Carolina.  To help you get acclimated, we have some valuable information to share regarding the registration of your vehicle and your driver’s license.

Vehicle Taxes

Payment of automobile property taxes is required before a license plate can be issued.  If you will be living in Greenville County, you need to go to the Greenville County Tax collector’s office.  They require that you bring your title or current registration to the auditor’s office in order to receive a tax bill.  The office is located in the County Administration Building, County Square, 301 University Ridge, Greenville.  Their phone number is 864-467-7040.

Vehicle Tags/Registration

Newcomers have 45 days after establishing residence to register their vehicle and purchase South Carolina license tags.  Tags are purchased at any local Department of Motor Vehicles office.

Please take the following with you:  Completed Form 400 (available at any DMV office and online at www.scdmv.org), current title and registrations, liability insurance information (including name of company and policy number), and your paid tax receipt for vehicle property taxes.

Drivers License

Newcomers have 90 days after establishing permanent residency to apply for a SC driver’s license (30 days for a CDL.)  Military personnel or students temporarily in SC are not required to have a SC driver’s license.

With a valid out of state driver’s license, you will have to take an eye exam and may have to take a knowledge test.

Please take the following with you to any local DMV office:  Social security card (or other approved document) and liability insurance information (name of company and policy number.)  Applicants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.  Currently the fee for a license is $12.50.  A South Carolina license is valid for ten years and must be renewed by your birthday in the tenth year.
