These days, nearly every coffee shop, library, airport and hotel offer a way to access the internet from your cell phone or other mobile device. That means the information you have on your phone could be available to hackers in the area – unless you’ve taken steps to protect your data.
Here are 4 ways to protect yourself:
Always use a password. Use the password option on your cell and mobile device, preferably with a password that is 6-8 characters long, mixing upper and lower case letters, other characters, and numbers.
Don’t access your personal or financial data using public Wi-Fi. Many people check their bank balances, review email, and make credit card purchases while using public Wi-Fi. We recommend you refrain from doing any of these until you have a secure and private internet connection.
Be wary of all attachments and links. If you don’t know the sender, don’t open the link. Even if you know the sender but weren’t expecting an attachment, call first to confirm the link is legitimate. This is a common way to send a virus.
Download software updates. Software updates from your phone provider are provided for many reasons, including to provide increased security as threats are discovered. Don’t ignore them or you could leave your device exposed.
We also recommend you share these tips with your children and other family members. Don’t make it easy for hackers to steal your personal information! If we can help you in any way, please call me at 864-400-3502 or click here to request more information.
