We hope you had a great Valentine’s Day! Love has been in the air all week, along with balloons, chocolates, romantic dinners, candy hearts, and, of course, jewelry.
If you’re lucky enough to have received new jewelry yesterday, let’s be sure that you have it properly insured.
Things to consider when insuring jewelry:
You may need to purchase additional coverage. Your homeowner’s policy covers theft of valuable items such as jewelry only up to a certain amount. If your jewelry exceeds the limit on your policy, you will want to purchase scheduled personal property coverage. In addition, coverage for misplacement or loss of jewelry is not automatic and must be purchased. Just call us at 864-288-9513 or email us to discuss your coverage.
Do you need an appraisal? You may need to have an independent appraisal if the insurance company requires it or if you don’t know the value of your jewelry. Each item should be listed with a description and value on paper. If you ever have a claim, having an appraisal can make the claims process much easier.
Photos of your jewelry are helpful to have. Lost or stolen pieces of jewelry sometimes can be recreated if the jeweler has a good photograph to work from.
You might want to reconsider your deductible amounts. As always, this impacts your policy premium. It’s a good idea to take a look at your deductibles whenever you make a change to your policy.
Don’t store your jewelry in jewelry boxes or in a drawer. These are the first places a thief will look. It is important to store your jewelry securely when it’s not in use. A safe in your home or a safe-deposit box is best. We ate happy to help if your jewelry needs to be replaced if it’s lost or stolen, but we’d rather your sentimental and valuable pieces stay with you and your family for years to come.
Here’s hoping your Valentine’s Day was full of fun and romance. And if there was no jewelry involved, well, there’s always next year!
