My Son Wants To Use His Car To Make Deliveries: Am I Insured?

By February 14, 2017April 2nd, 2020Auto Insurance

One of our clients contacted us recently to ask for proof of insurance on his child’s car.  You see, his child was starting a new job and would be making deliveries.

The employer required proof of auto insurance before the job offer was final, and our client needed a certificate to show they had auto insurance.  No problem, right?

Well, not exactly.  You see, most insurance companies will not provide coverage for a personal vehicle if it is being used for business purposes such as delivering goods.  Immediately, our account manager sensed a red flag.  She asked the client if the child would be making deliveries as part of his job.  She also asked if the child would be driving a company vehicle or his personal vehicle.

Turns out the child was expected to make deliveries using his personal vehicle, which meant there would be no insurance coverage in the event of an accident.  Our account manager offered to place the vehicle on a commercial auto policy to get the coverage needed, but the family choose not to accept the job offer because of the liability potential and the increased cost of moving the car to a commercial policy.
